  • ABOUT US
  • Yerevan Physics Institute (YerPhI) was founded in 1942 by brothers Abraham Alikhanov and Artem Alikhanyan as a branch of Yerevan State University. In 1943 YerPhI acquired the status of a Physics Institute within the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR․ Later on, two cosmic ray stations were set on Mount Aragats: Aragats (3200m) and Nor Amberd (2000m). In 1963, YerPhI was under the governance of the State Atomic Energy Committee of the Soviet Union. In September 2011, according to the decision by the RA Government, the Yerevan Institute of Physics was reorganized into the foundation “A. I. Alikhanyan National Science Laboratory (Yerevan Physics Institute). Alikhanyan National Laboratory has significantly strengthened its status as a leader in science in Armenia, annually having more than 30% of all scientific publications in the country in international journals with the highest impact factor. According to Thomson Reuters, AANL stands out with 70% of the citations to the entire scientific work of Armenia. This accounts for AANL scientists mainly publishing in high impact journals.
