Yerevan Physics Institute (YerPhI) was founded in 1942 by brothers Abraham Alikhanov and Artem Alikhanyan as a branch of Yerevan State University. In 1943 YerPhI acquired the status of a Physics Institute within the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR․ Later on, two cosmic ray stations were set on Mount Aragats: Aragats (3200m) and Nor Amberd (2000m). In 1963, YerPhI was under the governance of the State Atomic Energy Committee of the Soviet Union. In September 2011, according to the decision by the RA Government, the Yerevan Institute of Physics was reorganized into the foundation “A. I. Alikhanyan National Science Laboratory (Yerevan Physics Institute). Alikhanyan National Laboratory has significantly strengthened its status as a leader in science in Armenia, annually having more than 30% of all scientific publications in the country in international journals with the highest impact factor. According to Thomson Reuters, AANL stands out with 70% of the citations to the entire scientific work of Armenia. This accounts for AANL scientists mainly publishing in high impact journals.
Among the strategic problems of National Scientce Laboratory is the implementation of leading and newest researches in basic sciences, technological application of science for the benefit of the country's
economy, security, health, energy and the provision of education and training of the next generation of scientists (solution of problem of generational change in science). This
means that the National Science Laboratory is responsible for the country's scientific progress, economic well-being, health and provision of security.
The main strategic goal of the creation of the educational center as a separate unit of AANL is the involvement of young people in scientific works and scientific life, both with the prospect of becoming a future scientist, and in order to bring the public closer to science. Along with all this, a high level of students' knowledge and skills should be guaranteed.
The main target of the Media Group of A. Alikhanyan National Science Laboratory is the large-scale publicity of the works of the scientific structure. The Media Group uses a wide range of tools to inform the public about scientific activities. The media group actively cooperates with television companies, news sites, and radio stations, which regularly cover the work of the institute.
