AANL Researchers Publish Article on C18/18 Cyclotron Proton Beam Diagnostics

The accelerator diagnostics development team of the Applied Physics Research Division of the A. I. Alikhanyan National Science Laboratory (AANL), in collaboration with international partners, has published a scientific article entitled “Horizontal and Vertical Profiling of the Proton Beam of Cyclotron C18/18 by Vibrating Wire Monitors of Modernized Diagnostic Station.”

The new diagnostic system makes it possible to accurately measure proton beam profiles even at very low beam currents (~1 μA). This was achieved through the development of new monitors with an extended aperture of 28 mm, the removal of magnets from the beam exposure zone, and the implementation of new software. Particular attention was also paid to reducing electromagnetic interference.

The profiling station, consisting of two vibrating wires, can also be used to study structural changes in materials exposed to irradiation by heavy particles. During irradiation with beams of heavy particles, including protons, neutrons, and alpha particles, structural damage can form and accumulate in materials, potentially leading to permanent changes in their properties, particularly increased brittleness and hardening.

The research is of particular importance for the field of nuclear energy, especially for studying materials used in nuclear reactor vessels.

The article is available in the Journal of Contemporary Physics (Armenian Academy of Sciences).
