Norayr Akopov was born in the year of 1949. He started to educate in Moscow Physics-Technical Institute, then moved to the physics faculty of the Yerevan State University, where obtained the master diploma in 1971, and was accepted for PhD student position at Yerevan Physics Institute (YerPhI, now AANL) in the same year. He spent his PhD years at JINR (Dubna), where N. Akopov has been educated with the Monte Carlo methods in application to the high energy physics problems. Returning to YerPhI he started the first at YerPhI (also in Armenia) studies with the Monte Carlo methods application to simulate the processes of neutral and charged pions photoproduction measured on Yerevan synchrotron. He has defended his PhD thesis in 1978, then started to work as a head of Computational Physics Division. He is co-author of random number generator “MIXMAX”, which is now included in ROOT (CERN), and as to the statistical feature and period is one of the best random number generators in the world (
Since 1987 he started to participate in international collaborations, first at CERN, working on exotic baryons search based on data collected by WA56 collaboration, later since 1993 in HERMES collaboration on HERA accelerator at DESY (Hamburg), being since 2005 the Yerevan group leader. N. Akopov played a leading role at HERMES in studies of spin structure function g1, also he has motivated the experiments for measurements of generalized GDH Sum Rule, later his contribution in nuclear program at Hermes was essential, since 2007 he is the nuclear physics convener at HERMES. He has defended his doctoral thesis based on spin physics results in 2001. He was awarded by first and second scientific prizes at JINR (Dubna) for studies of spin physics phenomena. During the years 2011 – 2015 he was also the leader of Yerevan group participating in OLYMPUS collaboration performing the experiment on DORIS accelerator at DESY. He is author (co-author) of more than 125 papers published in the leading world journals, many times presenting talks (including invited talk) on various internationals conferences, his h-index is equal to 56. Since year 2015 he is a head of Computational Physics and IT division at YerPhI. Starting 2018 he is also a senior member of YerPhI group participating in Belle2 Collaboration (KEK, Japan). During many years he is teaching the students at Yerevan State University, Russian-Armenian University with the basics of the Monte Carlo Methods, also since 2014 teaching the students on magistrate courses at YerPhI. Many master diplomas and six PhD theses were defended under his supervising. Since 2018 he assigned with the Professor title by Higher Attestation Committee of Armenia.
Norayr Akopov is one of the leading experts in Armenia in fields of computational physics and modern experiments data analysis. Becides of that, during many years till now he is coordinating the IP connectivity for AANL (YerPhI). Norayr Akopov also played a leading role in installation of the first in Armenia Internet connection via satellite in 1993, realized by help of MSU and DESY.
